Behind the Scenes: Elevate Lifestyle Magazine Shoot

This month Fenix Fotography had the pleasure of shooting the fashion spread for Elevate Lifestyle Magazine, a local glossy with about 20,000 readers distributed in Uptown Charlotte and her surrounding neighborhoods.

The assignment was to shoot lingerie. I create a fair amount of boudoir and pinup photography, so this was familiar territory. I was excited to be working with stylist Joey Hewell (one of my favorite artistic collaborators), who got the wardrobe from EMartini, a South Park-area boutique for women's frilly underthings and sleepwear.

Assured of the clothes' elegance and knowing I wanted to shoot photos that women would want to look at (not just men), I decided to forego the Maxim Magazine approach in favor of a softer look and feel. I wanted the shoot to have a sense of having taken place in the past, a feeling of nostalgia, full of longing, and just a touch of melancholy.

To place this series of photographs in an indistinct part of the first half of the last century, I first looked at several historic properties around Mecklenburg County and Lake Wylie. Eventually, I settled on the historic Dunhill Hotel in Uptown. It's one of my favorite buildings in the area and I've shot there several times for weddings and private parties. I knew the elegant penthouse, with it's wonderful art-deco balcony, would give me the look I wanted. The spacious bathroom let hair artist, Stewart Hough, do his incredible work while Joey did makeup.

Generally, I had the models avert their gaze from the camera. They are alone and not posing for the visual consumption of a male viewer--not seducing through the lens. I told the models they are waiting for the return of their lover, perhaps from "the war," and they've made themselves as pretty as possible to welcome him. Only he hasn't yet arrived. Perhaps he's been delayed (no cell phones in the past), maybe something has happened. Eventually, one woman falls asleep waiting. Will she be wakened any moment by her returning hero's knock on the door, or will the sunrise greet her alone? I hope the former. As I said, hope and nostalgia mixed with the smallest dash of melancholy. It's not a literal story told in the photos--but a mood I wanted in the mix. Women are constantly making themselves beautiful for men, struggling to plan and pick just the right outfits to be seductive, hopeful and looking forward to reunions, only to wait for us to get home from the office. We hope they forgive our tardiness and don't let a romantic night be ruined.

To strengthen the mood, I lit the scenes using only one or, at most, two lights mixed with available window lights. I wanted soft, shadowy, and QUIET. Often I scream with my lights--this was a time to whisper.

The final photos are processed to have an aged feel. Faded and soft like memory. They aren't quite black and white and aren't quite color. Then there was the problem of modern bank buildings and parking decks in some of the shots--check out the mag to see how we dealt with those issues.

I called the series "Mayfair." Because I liked the way it felt as word--like a far away old English manor. It's also a nod to the original name of the hotel--an inside joke for my historian friends.

A lot has happened...

I'll be honest. I've been terribly neglectful of this blog. It seems I focus all my energy into facebook, cause they love me there and no one seems to follow me here--but why would they if there is nothing to read?

A lot has happened in the last few months.
1.) We're back in Charlotte. I loved Denver, but the Queen City is home to so many friends that it made sense personally to come back. Also, I have brand recognition in Charlotte because of my fashion work and business headshots / corporate photography, and boudoir photography--so it's also good from a business perspective. Oh yeah and my girlfriend's job transfered her back to the east coast, so that sorta clinched it.

Colorado was the most beautiful place I've ever lived and besides having only made a few friends, I loved everything about the place. I was through the "dip" business-wise, when it came time to go (Check out my Colorado business photography in the corporate portfolio. I'm proud of some of the work I did out there). It was disappointing and my heart broke a little to leave. But I'm rediscovering everything I LOVE(d) about Charlotte.

I really missed you guys.

While most of our clients are local publications, businesses, and talent agencies, other notable past clients include MTV, HBO, Ed Hardy, SMET, and the Pussycat Dolls.

In December 2007, VH1's The Shot sponsored an online contest for wedding photography. From 1,281 entries, one of my bridal images received both the highest number of votes (801) and the most views (1,866) world-wide.

The Light Factory Contemporary Museum of Photography and Film included my photography on their walls in exhibitions of Charlotte area artists taking place in 2006 and 2007.

In 2006, Maxim Magazine selected 3 models, on the basis of my photographs, as finalists in their nationwide "Hometown Hotties" contest. The photos were featured on the magazine's website for one year.

My work as a photo-retoucher/historic photograph restoration artist (2000-2006) appeared in Newsweek Magazine, AARP Magazine, and over thirty museum exhibitions (including one in South Africa).

Vision

We have the ability to imagine the unseen, see what is in front of us in a unique way, and have the technical ability to bring that vision into a final image.

Versatility

Many photographer's are "one trick ponies," who have a very limited number of shooting skills and fundamental gaps in their abilities. They shoot only to their strengths and often pass their limits off as "stylistic choice" or cloak their limited abilities in a shroud of deference--"I only believe in shooting natural light, because strobes are artificial."

We believe in shooting the type of light that best fits the story and within the situation we're dealing with. We shoot in a variety of visual styles as well as lighting techniques--there is very little we don't know how to accomplish technically. High, middle and low key set ups in studio or on location; large or small spaces; natural light, natural and mixed ambient light; shooting brighter than sunlight to tame bad light at non-ideal times, post-processing, etc.

All our lighting gear is easily transportable and we enjoy finding unique locations and sets to work in. We can shoot most any day of the week or on the weekends with appointment.

Adaptability

Even with the most careful planning, unforeseen and uncontrollable issues come up--a location may not work upon arrival, a VIP may only have a few minutes for the shoot at a horrible time of day, equipment could fail, there may be no electricity. In these cases you want a photographer who is flexible with the knowledge, skills, and backup equipment to complete the assignment in a clean and publishable way.

Leadership

Commercial, advertising, and fashion work is a collaborative effort. Without clear leadership on set, the models/subjects, fashion stylists, hair dressers, makeup artists, set crew, site personnel, and other team members loose team functionality. It is important that the photographer be capable of imparting focus and managing the set and the disparate needs of his players.

Relationship Building

My past editors always seemed to want big budget results with little-to-no budget. The only way this could be accomplished was through fostering relationships. I estimate that I've been able to borrow $100,000 in clothing for shooting purposes from various boutiques, not to mention a $300,000 boat and a $20-million airplane. I was also able to obtain top agency models, and the other services of other creative team-members all at no direct cost to the magazine. Of course, the name recognition and circulation of the periodical are a major piece in developing these relationships.

Reliability

We've never missed a deadline and never had a story killed.

Consistency

No publisher wants to bet on hit-or-miss work. We have a proven track record of delivering predictable high-quality results that are in line with original vision and concepts.

Professionalism

We understand that when we're working for you, we are representing your company. You can expect us to be well groomed, on time, friendly, respectful, and comport ourselves in an otherwise professional manner. We are used to dealing with company presidents, celebrities, politicians, law-enforcement, and will not embarrass you.

Responsibility

While throwing caution to the wind can at times result in a stunning photograph, youthful irresponsibility and danger have no place in the world of magazine publishing. The liability issues on set are numerous: tens of thousands of dollars in borrowed clothes, accessories, and shoes; twenty-thousand in camera equipment; safety of the models and crew, damage to objects at the location. We are well aware of these issues and work to manage your risk and promote a safe set. For instance: We always handle clothing borrowed in the name of the magazine with utmost care using transport bags and racks on set, we tape the bottom of shoes and don't allow them to be walked in except while shooting, we weight light stands to keep them from falling over, we never trespass, and we require liability waivers from everyone involved in the shoot.

I'm please to announce that Fenix Fotography will be relocating to Denver Colorado. I'm hoping they have folks in need of business portraits and head-shots, advertising agencies desperate for cool images, magazines and designers yearning for fashion, and sexy people of all types hungary for boudoir. Oh yeah, and the odd couple planning a fantastic wedding.

After a week-long secret mission to the Mile-High City, we located the perfect location for our new studio. Our new home will be in Denver's eclectic Highlands area--or more specifically the West or Lower Highlands. Or "LoHi" as the realtors have dubbed it. Realtors seem to do this everywhere--North Charlotte became "NoDa" then it seemed to grow all the way to Uptown as new condos and developments moved that way; "Southend" was always just the industrial part of Dilworth--no early 20th c. Charlottean would have been confused, but evidently it needed a new name when revitalization efforts began there a decade or more ago. But I digress.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the new place. It's a 19th c. Firehouse. If you know me at all I need not explain any more.

THESE ARE JUST SNAPSHOTS--NOT ARCHITECTURAL SHOTS. STILL, I TINK THEY GIVE A GOOD IDEA OF THE PLACE.

The original front facade of Highlands Firehouse No 5, built c. 1890. The two bays were where the two horse-drawn fire wagons would exit the building on their way to calls.

Today, the original front serves as side of the building, and a hedge blocks the historical view of the structure.

The blocked viwew does saden me slightly because the building has exceptional corbeling.

The present-day main entrance. Originally this was a side face. The re-entry door for returning horse-drawn fire wagons can be seen at the right.

Clients can park here or on the street.

The back (originally side) face. Mine is the upper deck. Perfect for parties and just relaxing with a glass of wine.

Basically, we're between down town and the majestic Rocky Mountains.

Some images I made on Monday. One of which will grace the cover of the May issue of Uptown Magazine.

The clothes/jewelry/shoes were all heavily inspired by the idea of armor and the story was one of a sunset yacht cruise.

The male model in the speedo's solo shot wasnt included in the the spread because he's more of background element than a fashion piece, but I've included him here cause he did such a great job and was such a good sport.

Fenix on assignment: Duke Energy Exec

This portrait presented several interesting challenges (but I'm actually quite pleased with the end result). Lighting explanation follows for those interested:

Challenges:

Of course the only available time to shoot this person would be 2:00 in the afternoon in brutal cloudless up-and down UGLY UGLY UGLY light.
The exhaust scrubbers and and stack had to be visible and behind the principal subject--so backlighting the guy on the other side of the facility was out.
The stack is several hundred feet tall, yet needed to be in the shot with the guy.
There needed to be some negative space for type above the guy's head in a nearly square vertical image.

Solution:
After driving all over the site, I managed to find the single small patch of shade under a coal conveyor (4'-square) that would give me a view of the scrubber vessels and stack that was a moderate distance away from the structure.

With a polarizer on the camera to darken the sky and cut the reflection on the metal structure, I exposed for the background. In the shade, the ambient exposure on the guy is where his left ear is (under exposed several stops). I quickly set up an AB-1600 studio light on a stand, powered by a AB-VagabondII, and rigged a baffled 36-in umbrella to give me a not-too soft light. Shortlighting the subject from the same direction (but not angle) as the sun, gave me the shape I wanted on his face. I gradually brought the artificial light up to where it more or less matched the sun for intensity. I chose not to fill, and to rig only one light so as to retain a high-ratio look somewhat in line with the natural light.

Lens choice was prety important here because of foreground background compression--a long lens brought the factory forward so that it towered twice as high as the engineer, nor would it have allowed both to be in focus. So, I opted for a wide angle lens, checking the distortion and deciding to center the guy and crop it from the horizontal position so as to keep the guy in the least distorted area (23MP means I can crop). I realize I did have to sacrifice a little paunch in the lower bit of the frame.

I think the akimbo pose works because I really wanted a heroic feel for this portrait and that idea is complimented by the sense of scale.

Jet Set

I had a great experience last week shooting a fashion story out at the Concord Airport.

The basic conception was a Ricky Martin-type whisking two gorgeous women off to a Rio-like destination for the weekend. I love the idea--the trick would be pulling it off for under $5.

The answer of course lies with working with such a wonderful team.

Reservoir Dogs: On Stage

This week I had the distinct pleasure of creating some of the marketing photographs for an upcoming stage production of Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs. Apparently, the piece was originally written as a play and fans of the film will notice several slight differences and early explorations of ideas explored in Tarantino's later work.

I really do love my job.

I absolutley live for doing big production fashion stuff and creating the hyper-real world that is home for most of my work. However, some days it's nice to get away from $1500 pairs of shoes and back into the real world with real people.

I had the distinct pleasure of recently of being hired to document an important moment in the lives of two new parents. It was truly an honor to be chosen for this task, as I know photos like these become the conerstone of family memory, a record of tradition, and an expression of the couple's faith. It was also nice to make some simple, quiet, and honest images.

Uptown Business Portrait

One of my favorite "outside-of-the-studio" ways to shoot is to walk around Uptown and snatch and grab whatever backgrounds and environments are in good light and available. I walked this client about 15 blocks for his business portrait and got all sorts of great shots from locations all over uptown.

Fenix on Assignment: cover Story for the Mecklenburg Times

I've got the cover of the Mecklenburg Times this week. It's the weekly business paper here.

Photo is of a guy watching his business assets being auctioned off after declaring bankruptcy. The look on his face really tells the story of what's going on with the economy. The editor said it really was quite powerful. I've had the cover before--but always with a carefully scripted and precisely posed photo.

It was a slightly odd experience to make the image. It felt good to tell a story that will humanize the struggle of working folks in this economy. Still it sucks.

The Foundry--Sneak Peak

Everyone on the team was awesome and good sports about working on their feet for no less than five hours in the largely air-conditioned confines of this local copper factory. The best part about this job really is getting to collaborate with extremely talented artists in other fields.

The Sexies Are Coming

Whew,

I took a big risk last night.

I wanted to do a bridal portrait inspired by of one of those barbie cakes--you know, the ones where the doll is stuffed inside a skirt-shaped cake and then the whole thing is decorated to look like a cake. Only I wanted to do it life-sized with the bride in the cake. The store-bought ones have gotten a little sophisticated, lately--but I wanted to do one of the older style kind that looked home-made by somebody's mother. I figured the fondant style would look like a plastic dress, so I just went with a traditional hand spread and piped icing look.

But like Cher said, "Until you're ready to look foolish, you'll never have the possibility of being great." so I knew I may fall flat on my face and I was nervous. But if you don't feel nervous what's the point, right?

I think it paid off. And of course I couldn't have done it with out Scott Arnold on makeup and Jen for so bravely getting iced into my giant cake.

I've been stringing lately for the Mecklenburg Times--yes, sorta like Peter Parker. No, no radioactive spiders yet.

I'm shooting for articles mostly having to do with business--especially business persons. I've been shooting "CP" or center piece images--those designed to anchor a page visually.

To be sure, it's been an interesting process: For one thing, the culture of the paper is different than the magazine I usually work for. The Meck Times wants a very solid, serious feel--hey I can do that. I'm a big believer in crafting the message a client wants--some artists have a problem with this, but in this case my job is to be creative within guidelines. I was slightly hoping to shoot a bank executive in a bathtub full of money though.

The other thing is how little time you have to get the shot. These CEO-types are extremely busy. My last three assignments have been accomplished in under 5 minutes. One subject (not pictured who I won't name), said the only time he/she could spare was "literally two minutes" if we could shoot it somewhere along the way as we walked to his/her next meeting. Somehow I pulled it off--found a suitable location, and got the shot in my allotted time including changing lenses. Would I have liked more time? Sure--but I got it and my editor was very happy with the photo...something Peter Parker never could manage.

Oh, and keep in mind, that the mag is printed in CMYK and it get converted back into RGB for the web--which plays havoc with the colors sometimes.

The color looks horrible on my monitor-- due to the RGB>CMYK>RGB conversion that they do to these for the web.

My work's on the cover (though that's not the one I tagged for cover consideration) and the spread on page 57--just type "57" into the little box at the top.

I also shot the music producer, but evidently my byline got left off.

This month we had snow and though there was a couple of sunny days--mostly it's been cold dreary and wet. So when the assignment came down from Uptown Magazine to do a spread of spring fashion, I had to creatively problem solve. A bigger magazine, would have simply flown me to Costa Rica or somewhere warmer--however my budgets wouldnt buy coffee for the crew.

I remembered a photo that Sante d'Orazio took of a nude in a greenhouse--a photo I'd long admired. While I knew I couldnt shoot anything like d'Orazio here, I began to think that a greenhouse might be a way to shoot lush green foilage in a time when everything around here is dead and brown. My first thought was to try and get the aviary at the North Carolina Zoo--but distance and number of visitors told me it was impractical. UNCC had a more run of the mill worn down greenhouse, that would contrast nicely with the elegant clothes I'd be shooting, but my editor wanted me to supplement the issue's architectural theme if at all possible. It was then that I remembered that Daniel Stowe botanical Garden in Gaston County had recenlty erected an impressive architecturally beautiful facility to showcase their orchid collection. I set it up with DSBG and got to work assembling a crew of talented folks to do the hair, makeup clothes, etc--this type of photography is a collaborative art and I'm always grateful to work with other talented people.

Portrait of a Bowler

Kids,if you try this at home wait till your parents are gone.

Here's one of my favorite shots from a session I did with long-time client and friend Matt. In addition to being one of Charlotte's most sought-after DJs, Matt is an avid bowler and actually runs a bowling alley.

I've photographed Matt in traffic on his Harley, working in his DJ booth, as well as several other locations over the years. So when Matt called me to comission something for his annual Crash Matt's Bash party, I immediately wanted to raise the bar and do something we hadn't done.

Immediately, I thought of a photograph I'd made about a year and a half ago of a tomato on fire--not an easy task considering they are 90% water. It occurred to me that we had never done a photo of Matt having to do with bowling and from there I thought of the burning bowling ball.

I dont do a lot of infant photography--though it is a lot like my work with other models, just with a few more poopoo and peepee breaks. However, when longtime client Nikki Kirsch and husband Eric had a new baby a couple of days ago I decided to drop my prohibition on photos of people smaller than watermellons.

Here he is only a couple of days old. I swear the kid didnt open his eyes much more than that--are they sort of like puppies?

I Never Want to Eat Another Hamburger Again

September was Uptown Magazine's Food Issue and I drew an assignment to visit and shoot the wares of something like a dozen burger places in Charlotte for an article about the ancient food item (the sandwich actually pre-dates Ghengis Kahn. Who knew?) But what this really means is that I went to all these places and scarfed down my subject matter as soon as the lens cap was back on.

The burger in the shot above is actually one of my own making (dont worry, I ate that one too) and as a photographer it's also a bit of a statement about food photography. Food photography often strikes me as very sterile and overly contrived. The buns in most shots like this are often made from carved wood and often have sesame seeds precisely glued into place. I wanted to make a sophisticated high-end image of a burger in terms of lighting and execution, but I wanted to shoot a big gnarly burger that was anything but neat. I wanted juicy, and messy--something you could smell right through the page. I hope it worked.

We were happy that with such an important occasion, ours was the studio he chose. I went for a sort of old hollywood/film-noir look with modern trappings and am really happy with the results. Hey guys, we're very excited to announce that we are published all through Uptown Magazine's August Issue.

We shot the 8 page fashion spread at HOM (a big shout out to Scooter and Monica for makeup, Modern Salon for hair, the models from Evolution, Michelle for assisting and helping me schlep lights, and of course the lovey and talented Jennifer Misenhiemer for fashion styling and co-art direction.) The shoot also landed us the cover--and covers are the currency of the fashion photography economy.

Our work can also be seen in the magazine's article about touring the NC mountians by motorbike, the "Scene," and the "Life." Whew, it was a busy month working for Uptown.

Not sure if these are my strongest imgages from today, they jumped out and god do I hate to edit, but I needed to pull something out before I could work on something else.

For the photo geeks in the crowd, these were shot with a 70-200 f/2.8L IS, accept the last one which was a 17-40 f/4L (I'm only a bout two feet outside of the radius of that hammer, trying to keep most of me covered by a barrier, but my head and camera did have to stick out some). I did have to dodge a caber (the big telephone pole things) that got turned 90-degrees and launched in my direction. It was all quite fun.

Last Friday I was contracted by the Forum as the official shooter for "The Rockers' Ball: SMET Fashion Show. Smet is the new line of clothes from designer Christian Audigier who adapted tattoo artist Ed Hardy's work into the fashion line bearing both their names.

As with last year's Ed hardy Show the event was hosted by former Baywatch star Jeremy Jackson. Thinking he was merely an Emcee for the event, I was suprised and impressed at how much creative direction Jackson had over the event.

Fenix on Assignment: Charlotte Bobcats

Last night I photographed the Bobcats v. Timberwolves game for Uptown Magazine. Dont tell anyone I'd never photographed a basketball game before.

(this is the only one I cropped--actually extra negative space was hard to get)

I know this one isnt very usable, but I do love the expression on their faces.

I swear the next frame would have been in focus if not for the sudden impact. fortunately I remembered to hold on to the camera and go with the inertia (no I'm not kidding--I was hit by this ball and nearly run over)

These were all shot using available light (for $300 I could have tied into the overhead strobes--enhh oh well, maybe next time) all at 1/500; f/2.8-3.5;1600 ISO using a Canon 5D and a 20D with a 70-200L 2.8 and a 16-35L 2.8.
Switching the lenses between the cameras let me get more diversity from the the two lenses (eg: the 200mm on the 20D makes it a 300 and let me shoot the opposite end of the court, while on the 5D it was great for close ups under the basket).

I shot an interesting event for one of my regular clients tonight--the Forum. The party had a James Bond theme and featured stunt men, live action, actors and actress in the roles of spies and femme fatales, free glamor makeovers, movie filming, an open bar.

Upstairs they had a green screen set up where you could have your photo made and dropped into a nifty background. On my way out to photograph the Aston Martin DB8 that was on site with two of my favorite models, we quickly grabbed this pic for posterity (see above).

It was the biggest event the Forum has done to date. And it was totally private. So if you weren't there, you'll just have to check out the pics.

MTV Party in Charlotte at the Forum

Wow, last night's party at the Forum, where they filmed the pilot for the new MTV show The Hollywood Life was outta control.

As the event's offical photographer I was right in the middle. As always, it was a pleasure to work with the folks at the Forum, but working with MTV was a real treat.

Late Night Thoughts on Photographing Celebrities

Seeing the ads for the upcoming Tommy Lee event at HöM got me thinking about the nature of shooting celebrities at public appearances and how many I can count in my portfolio and how it affects my art—for good or evil. I don’t currently have a “celebrities” portfolio on view. Would having one show that as a photojournalist, I can get the job done when it’s time to get that money shot, or does showcasing such images whose merit is mostly the people in them detract from my work and make me merely a paparazzi?

I for one have never been one to be impressed by celebrity. As a teen I met a lot working for NASCAR’s private country club—but it seems I’ve brushed elbows with quite a few in the last 12 months. Let’s see… of the top of my head:

NFL greats Howie Long and Bubba Smith were at the Bronko Nagurski Awards. Which was pretty cool. I meet so many Panthers and NASCAR drivers I hardly notice, but these guys definitely are note worthy.
The two guys who played Christopher and Artie from the Sopranos I got to follow around all night last week at The Forum.
A couple months before that, there was Kevin Dillon form HBO’s Entourage.
I met Jeremy Jackson prior to an Ed Hardy fashion show—he actually took the time to ask for my card and later sent me (or his secretary) an email to let me know it was nice to meet me and that he liked the photos he’d seen from my show. He even had a couple on his myspace page for a while.
Last spring I had the honor of being invited to Level Cross to meet Richard Petty—I’d written a book tracing the history of auto-racing in the region through photography and Mr. Petty asked if I’d deliver him an autographed copy for his library (TRUE STORY). My book featured a very young Richard on the cover and I did two things I never do with celebrities—I asked him to autograph one of my books and posed for a photo. Cheesy, I know.
Perhaps the most significant celebrity experience I had didn’t even involve working. I was in New York City last February and went to a book signing at Taschen to meet photographer David LaChapelle and Amanda Lepore, who were also promoting David’s new gallery show of work inspired by earlier paintings of the Biblical Deluge. We chatted for a minute and David slipped me an invite to a party he was having. I cant go into all the details, but it was definitely one of the coolest parties I’ve ever been to.

I often find myself feeling sorry for these celebrity-types when I meet them. Sure, they’ve got money, sex, private jets… but they’re also surrounded by people who something from them, constantly being pawed at and harassed. It’s gotta suck not to be able to eat in a restaurant without being constantly interrupted or leisurely enjoy the park.

So in answer to the question I posted at the beginning of the blog: No. I’m not yet paparazzi. The celebrity jobs just happen—I don’t really seek them out. They really aren’t any different for me than any other gig, I think as long as I can do my job with professionalism, human empathy and attention to the art of it, I haven’t crossed that line yet.

The party was held in one of the Arlington's penthouses and was a very posh affair featuring a live jazz band and tons of sushi catered by Nikko's. It was heartwarming to documet the event for this great lady's family and friends.

Last night the local band U-phonik tore the roof off Alley Cat--a regular client of mine. I was really looking forward to the show, because having seen them before, I knew they have a dynamic stage presence--and nothing makes for more boring photography than musicians who stand still like statues.

I knew I wanted really dramatic lighting and shot the first set completely by stage lights, timing shots to correspond with certain sequences of flashing lights and making special use of the flashing colored lights for rimming and separation.

With the last set I got a little bolder--switching to black and white photography. I rigged and secured a wireless flash to a column and placed a red gel on it to increase the contrast between the dark and light areas. I positioned the light so that it was aimed toward where I'd be shooting from to create lens flare or to back light the musicians when they were between me and the light. I wanted to work up close, but also used the same light to split light the band in frontal view shots.

I think they are some of my favorite band shots ever. Check out a couple in my Musicians portfolio or look at them all in the Photo Pickup area.

Wow, what a night! Last night’s Soprano’s Party at the Forum in Charlotte was incredible fun.

Special guests Michael Imperioli (Christopher) and John Ventimiglia (Artie) partied with Charlotte’s most dapper dons and mafia mistresses, while I was on hand as the club's official photographer for the event. Basically, I followed the two HBO stars around throughout the night snapping their pics with VIPs and clubgoers. Also in the course of last week I did two editorial shoots for Uptown Magazine. After a creative meeting with the editor on Tuesday and establishing a deadline of only a few days, I set about creating the shoots. The first one illustrates an article on chocolate and how "It's Not Just for Fat Chicks Anymore." I was able to get the talented Kristen Dauss to model the shoot (I worked with Kristen before and was glad I could get her a tear-sheet for her portfolio). Luckily Kristen was also named to Creative Loafing's Lust List this week, which should increase her recognizability for the shoot I did with her. I have to say I have an awesome job where I can call up one of the sexiest women in the city and with a straight face tell her I want to cover her in chocolate.

The other Uptown shoot was for an article on relationship advice given by a divorce attorney, titled "Love Stinks." A quick trip to the Army Surplus store allowed to procure two Israeli gas masks. With my deadline looming, I obtained wardrobe from walmart and brokered a deal with my apartment community to use their model unit. Thanks so much to models Dave Ivester and Kim Boffa who showed up at my place at 9:00 at night with only half and hour's notice. The initial concept was of a couple sitting in a white bed wearing the gas-masks and looking like they were arguing. Facial expressions were out due to the masks, so the concept had to be sold purely with body language--a challenge.

I think both concepts came together very well and it was a fun challenge to work and deliver under great pressure. Be sure to look for those pics, as well as my NYE photo essay in the Feb issue of Uptown.

Wow, what a week...

I've had an incredible week.

It started off with two fashion shoots--thanks to both Matt and Violetta, who both posed fabulously on Sunday and Monday. You'll see one of the pics from Matt's shoot on the poster for Alley Cat's "Crash Matt's Bash" event on the 11th.

I've also met with three lovely future brides getting married in 2008-9 during the last seven days. I can't wait for wedding season to begin. I really do enjoy the story-telling aspect of the events.

I also did two shoots for Uptown, but I'll write about them in the next posting.

My weddings business partner (John) and I shot this wedding together back in the fall, and delivered the physical album to an ecstatic bride several months ago and on time. However I've been slack about getting an online version to show you guys. Actually I've been slack about getting my new "Weddings" website up in general.

I have to say I'm as proud of the design on this one as I am the actual photos. Be sure to notice the red satin motif inspired by the bridesmaid dresses and the yellow frames from the boutonnieres.

Photography: The Boudoir Trend

You may have heard of one of the latest trends in wedding photography. Hint: It involves the bride wearing a lot less than her gown. Boudoir photography is definitely gaining popularity among to-be brides, but what's it really all about? Find out whether these risque pics are for right you.

So, what is boudoir photography exactly?Boudoir photography is a sexy new trend that's especially popular as a wedding day gift from a bride to her groom. Boudoir photos are usu ally taken wearing either just a little, or well, nothing at all. They're hardly X-rated though, but rather PG-13 -- as in classic pinup-inspired pics, or what the pros call 'implied nudes.' That means you're not wearing anything, but you're also not showing off anything either (think shot from the back, or lying on your stomach).

Who will take my pictures?Many wedding photographers have embraced this trend -- your shutterbug may offer this as an additional service. An added bonus of going with a pro: Many brides like to have the best of their boudoir photos bound in a mini album just for their hubby, a service many wedding photographers are able to arrange. In some cities, you may also be able to find services that specialize in boudoir photography. While the shots you get may not be as high quality as those of a high-end wedding photographer, there can be other perks --like closets full of potential wardrobe items or props.

When should I schedul e the session?If you're spending time and money on an exercise and primping routine, you may want to wait until a week or so before the wedding to show off the results. Plus, a fun and pampering photo shoot is a good way to indulge and take some time out from wedding planning. Though you might be inclined arrange for the session on the morning of your wedding, resist the urge. For one, you're not likely to feel very sultry if the rain clouds looming over your outdoor ceremony site are the first thing on your mind. Second, do you really want your to-be mother-in-law walking in on you while you're posing in just your veil? Stick with a separate shoot so you'll have time to really feel comfortable and get some great shots.
How long does it take?Though it depends on the package you choose, your boudoir photo session will probably last about two hours. Why so long? It takes time for hair and makeup, plus the additional lighting setup. It may also take you a little while to relax. Most brides aren't used to lounging around wearing little, if any, clothing in front of the camera, so your first few shots will likely look a bit stiff.

What does it cost?Cost varies considerably -- do a little investigating before you commit to a vision of what you want. Multiple set changes, renting props, or simply time spent can add up quickly. If you can add a private session onto your wedding package, you may be able to get a better deal than if you go with a different wedding photographer. The real key, of course, is whether you gel with your photographer -- if you don't feel comfortable, it will show on camera.
Where should I have it done?Talk with your photographer to come up with the best location. Many photographers may be able to do a photo session in a studio. Another popular site is a posh hotel room. Your own home or a borrowed home is another option. The main key is to get an okay from your photographer on the locale -- a number of different backgrounds for poses are important, and they'll also need lots of natural light.

What should I wear?The most important thing -- choose outfits that make you feel sexy. A good rule of thumb: Bring something white, something black, and something in a bright color so you can mix and match. A corset will create sexy curves. In addition to lingerie, don't forget shoes, jewelry, and that engagement ring.

Should I bring anyone along?Though you don't want to turn your shoot into a three-ring circus, it's a good idea to bring a friend. Why? You'll feel more at ease if you can make a few jokes with a pal, plus she may be able to help with suggestions. Another idea: Bring a bottle of bubbly. A little champagne may help loosen things up. You'll be posing like a pro in no time -- but of course, this is a one-time-only exclusive for a very special audience (your very lucky groom).

What Drives Me

For as long as I can remember, visual art has been at the core of who I am. Drawing, and later painting, filled my childhood days and later the insomnia of my early adolescent nights.

At the age of fifteen my uncle gave me my first “real” camera—an early 1970s Fujika SLR with 3 interchangeable lenses. The camera was 20 years old, heavier than I was used to, and save the light meter, had no electronic components. But the glass was sharp and I was elated with the feeling of control offered. I was awed by this synergy of art, scientific principle, and technology.

Since my high-school had no photo classes, I voraciously devoured every book on the subject I could. Sadly, photography proved herself too expensive a mistress to be supported by my afterschool restaurant job and the coolest stuff like developing film and making my own prints eluded me for a number of years. I mostly contented myself with my painting. But I yearned for it.

My passion for the photographic medium was rekindled when I left for Europe with a new camera at the beginning of my junior year of college. By that time the digital revolution was fully underway. Although, I’d eventually take darkroom classes, FINALLY witnessing the magic of seeing my images appear on paper suspended in a tray of developer, it was obvious that dodging and burning by hand was a fading art. I began scanning my negatives (it would be another 10 years before digital cameras caught up to film) and processing them in the “digital darkroom” environment of Adobe Photoshop.

My skills with these new technologies landed me a job after college with a local museum, where I designed the exhibits and oversaw the printing and production of photography. At first it was like being a kid in a candy-store, I was able to order billboard-sized graphics and experiment with printing on cloth and projected images—everything I couldn’t afford to do on my own. I was in charge of anything related to photography and was especially passionate about digital restoration and retouching historic photographs. I deepened my sense of style and worked toward mastery of my technical abilities during this time.

Though the exhibits I worked on won awards and I was getting a lot artistic energy out, it saddened me more than a little that I was working other photographer’s images with so much fire, while my own photography took a back seat.

While working my design job during the day, I began to seriously develop my own vision and hone my craft at night and on the weekends.

I could finally afford proper lights, lenses, and other needed equipment… well barely. I studied, networked, assisted other more established photographers, and experimented… God, did I experiment.

Although I use modern tools, my style is very much rooted in the classical photographic techniques and greatly influenced by my experience as a painter and designer.

Eventually, I began making nearly the same money shooting weddings, fashion, portraits, and products as I was at my “real job.” Eight years later, I knew I was ready to do this full time. Yes, apparently I have a small problem with commitment, but here I am and I’ve never been happier.

Eric and Nikki's Wedding

It was such a wonderful privilege to be part of Eric and Nikki's wedding day. Thanks so much to the Gregg and Kirsch families for being so easygoing and fun to work with. I have a mountain of great images both from the wedding and the cruise and I am working hard to get them edited and up in a web gallery so the families and friends can see them.

Our NEW Studio Space

Our studio is located at the very heart of NoDa—Charlotte's historic art's district—inside the newly renovated Highland Park No.3 textile mill--2903 N. Davidson Street, suite 2033, Charlotte, NC 28205.

This new space is a dream, affording great depth, high ceilings, large windows for occasional natural light shooting, and a lofted area for shooting straight down. Nerdy stuff, I know---just know it works well from a technical standpoint. Best of all, because this building was renovated mostly for use as apartments, so we have a real bathroom for you to get ready in, room and light for hair and makeup artists, and a full kitchen for snacks. If you've ever shot in one of those dilapidated warehouse studios, you'll really appreciate our facilities.

But we're harldy limited by the confines of the studio. All our lighting gear is easily transportable and enjoy finding unique locations and sets to work in.
